Calabar High School 2010 Project
Although examination results cannot by themselves be a total judge of performance, they do in fact give a general overview of performance. The continued decline in overall academic performance and discipline at Calabar High School is cause for much concern. A review of the 6th Form (grades 13) 2007 external exam results show the following
There has however been some academic achievements, with students winning a number of scholarships and teams such as the Schools Challenge Team performing exceptionally well over the past few years. Our achievements on the sports field have also improved recently. However not many of the team members have performed adequately enough in the classroom to qualify for many of the athletic scholarships which are currently available.

The schools infrastructure is in urgent need of a major overhaul. There is an urgent requirement of four (4) additional classrooms and the refurbishing of nearly all the existing classrooms. To add insult to injury, a number of classrooms were recently damaged during the passing of hurricane Dean and some have still not been repaired satisfactorily.
This ever increasing poor performance of Calabar students adds to the growing phenomenon of the marginalization of young men in the society as a substantial number of her graduates add to these statistics each year.
SUPPORT FROM OLD BOYS
Despite all of the above, Calabar Old Boys continue to support the school and in fact many of the existing non-classroom activities could not continue with the success that exists without support from Old Boys. This support however is as a result of each chapter of the association going back to its members every year (sometimes several times within a year) to solicit funding.
CALABAR 2010 PROJECT
Whilst funding by itself can not solve all the existing problems at Calabar, adequate funding will go a far way in providing the necessary resources to fix the problems. The problems at Calabar are many and vary from social to economic and infrastructure issues.
The 2010 PROJECT seeks to raise sufficient funds over a 3 year period (no funds will be disbursed the first 3 years of the project) to establish a self sustaining fund that can support the identified needs at the school. These needs include
- Inability to purchase required text books
- Students arriving at school hungry with no money to purchase lunch
- Inability to pay external examination fees
- Inability to purchase required equipment to participate in extra curricula sporting activities
- Insufficient funding to support school clubs (science, photography, drama, foreign language, etc)
The Goal of the 2010 PROJECT is to reverse the decline in the overall performance of the students at Calabar High School thus reducing the propensity for these young men to become marginalized.
By providing financial, technical and social support, it is expected that Calabar will produce better rounded graduates, properly prepared to take on the world and take their rightful place in the society.
PROJECT METHOD
To meet annual non infrastructure and recurrent expenditure needs, and to ensure that a sustainable fund is established, funds collected will be placed on deposit over a three year period and the interest earned disbursed annually commencing the fourth year. The table below shows how the available funds will be allocated.
It is to be noted that 10% of the interest earned each year will added to the principal to be re-invested ensuring the sustainability of this fund. Disbursement will however commence earlier if our collection targets are exceeded.
NB. FUND WILL BE MAINTAINED IN US$
Disbursements will be based on specific requests and each funding request must be accompanied by the following
- Statement of existing situation (e.g. lack of equipment, materials etc.)
- How funds received will be utilised
- What are the expected improvements anticipated as a result of funds received
- How will the anticipated improvements be measured and over what time period
- What is the ultimate performance “target” for this activity.
PROJECT EVALUATION
The results of implementing PROJECT 2010 will not be evident in the short term; however substantial improvements should be evident within five years of implementation. It is important to note that the full benefits can not be realized, unless the project is funded in its entirety.
The success of this project will be measured against the following “yardsticks”
- ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE
- EXTRA-CIRRICULA SPORTING ACTIVITIES
- PERFORMANCE OF SCHOOL CLUBS
- SCHOOL DISCIPLINE
- QUALITY OF ACADEMIC STAFF
PROJECT BUDGET
The budget for the annual recurrent expenditure is as follows;
PROJECT MANAGERS
The project will be managed by the following Old Boys
- Desmon Brown
- Lance Cowan
- Lincoln Eatmon
- Carlton Hibbert

calabar should have a student development team or committee and should rehabilitate there student council
calabar should have a learning centre for slow learners and refurbishing their swimming pool.Am a 2004 graduate.
I think this is a good effort and I hope to see it achieve and surpass your expectations. I trust the current students will work to aid the project and not against it and that they will make the most of the opportunities available to them. God bless you.
Good day,
Im a current 6th form student at the great Calabar High School and a Deputy Head Student. Calabar has had a valuable impact on my life and I fully encourage this project as the school desperately needs it. We need our old boys.
As a former student of the great institution, (CALABAR, C-BAR, RABALAC) I will do whatever I can do to support the cause. On a separate note, I think we need to devise a plan to reach out to the “Old Boys” of Calabar both local and abroad.
here sir here sir yow i am a present student at c-bar and right now the school gawn down to nu thing mi nu have nu t.d teacher from sept 2007 and now a 2008 and exam round next mi get a building construction teacher in sept 2007 and jus 2week him come class for in january 2008 from that until now mi nu have nu teacher mi nu see them old boy a school a only when we a win thing them come passby ask them so i hope this 2010 project will benifit the student
A very good idea. Many of us old boys not currently in the country are seeking ways to help this beloved intitution and this is a tangible means to begin to give back.
i am currently a student of calabar, it’s a shame to see calabar with such a low maintenance level. the 10th grade block, (wow) the 2010 i hope will help the school to be a better place 4 learning. Hope people will find it in their hearts to give to make better a school such as c-bar.
I have long awaited the intervention of somebody, (anybody!) in the development of Calabar High School. This school is very dear to my heart; I have friends and ‘little brothers’ at this school. I sincerely hope that there will be a serious approach taken to its improvement. Not just word of mouth, nor a project started and abadoned two weeks later. This project is essential and must be approached with a full knowledge of its importance andits role in the motivation and upliftment of C-BAR students, both present and to come.
I love this school dearly! I am ashame of myself for not being there for Calabar and as a result, I would now like to do my part to make Calabar reclaim its rightful place as Jamaica’s premier learning instituiton. I have quite a number of friends here in New York who would love to give back to Calabar, they just need a little encouraging to do so. What I think must be done is that we should engage our Old Boys and supporters at Boys Champs, record the email addresses and telephone numbers so that in the future we may be able to contact them in an effort to solicit donations. Come on gentlemen, the time to act is now! Those student need us!
i am a 1978 graduate and i am sadden by the state of the once top high school in the 70’s . I visited the school 5 years ago i m living in NY.
Is a NY chapter of COBA? Just moved here and would definately like to know whats up.
Hello1 I am trying to contact the school. Can you please provide me with a valid telephone 7 fax #. Either by e-mail or @ Yale Assocites 1-631-732-4400 Ext 258
I am a proud past student of this great institution called Calabar High School. I keep regualr contacts with my friends in Jamaica and I always ask about my school, I have heard a number of wonderful thing, sporting wise but I heard about the physicallity of the school and I must say, I am ashamed. No matter how much money you spend to revamp the school, if the induviduals aint going to take care of it, within 3 years you’ll be back where you started. I wonder if Calabar still screen their student cause it seems to me they’ll accept any one that comes to them, some one need to make sure of that because i got screened. Many might disagree with my statement just now but if you gonna invest finances into the school you dont need no one there who dont appreciate the utilities and equipment that is there to make them better induviduals, if your grades aint well enough, no sports, not even interform, its called tough love. Calabar needs a strick responsible principal who loves the school as much as the students who attend the school, why, if you love some thing, you will not sit and watch it deteriorate. I hope this project is a success, I really do but until I see some thing happen, I aint holding my breath. I have heard yal Older Old boys preach about these things and still the swimming pool looks deplorable, no more talk, just get it done.
I am a Calabar old boy who graduated in 2006.I must first of all give kudos to this new initiative being undertaken, I for one hope it will be successful. I am very disheartened at the state in which my beloved school is in; the school’s academic performances need to improve, i am not at all pleased with the way the majority of the students are performing, it is quite unacceptable for a prestigious high school such as ours to be struggling to keep up with some of the upgraded high schools. I totally agree with some of the points made by the person who preceded me, money alone will not solve all the problems, we first of all need to start from scratch with the person’s entering first form, and set standards by which they must follow; i propose the implementation of an entry exams so as to ensure that these persons fit the criteria to attend the school. I am ashamed to tell you, that while i was in fifth form not too long ago, i was in a literature class with the late Dr. Gordon, when she called a particular student of fourth form to stay in our class until she was finish; while continuing with her class she told the boy to stand up and read a paragraph from one of the literature books we were reading. Dr. Gordon and the class was quite surprised at the fact that the boy was in fourth form and could not read. i was very ashamed of this,it was very insulting. it would be of no surprise to me if many more young men like him are at the the school presently. It grieves my heart to see some of my former school and classmates in Half Way Tree hustling, because they wasted their years of schooling. I would like to share a lot more with you but i can’t until a later date; all i can say in closing is, to the person’s implementing the 2010 project, do some thorough research as to what is causing the deterioration of the school before spending money.
I WISH U ALL THE BEST OF LUCK!!!!!!!!!BUT JUST MEK SURE SEH MI MAN COMFORTABLE IN HIS WORKING ENVIRONMENT.CALABAR 4 LIFE!!!!!!!!!!!CALA BABY SEH SUH.
Cock mouth ketch cock. WHEN THE BIGOTRY happened at Cbar no one said a word. Do you know how mnay downtown youth suffered under the color/class prejudice including that shown by MANY TEACHERS. What do you expect now for people to run to Calabar’s help. Man, you must be joking.
My brother Richard Freckleton known as Freckles was a student there. He played rugby for the school and even though he passed tragically I still recognized CBar as a great school.I truly hope that things will turn around for the school.
Hi, i am a graduate of Calabar (1998), i am saddened by what i have read from both existing and recent graduates.
Making contact with Old boys is very crucial to this initiative. I believe that running a couple 1 minute ad on radio, and tv or something in the print media would be sufficient to get the rallying call out.
There are also a couple Old Boys groups on the social networks (hi5, facebook, myspace etc)
Here sir, Here sir, Here sir, Here sir, at the call of Calabar.
Calabar is still the greatest high school in Jamaica. I am declaring that! Even though it may not look that way. My best years were spent at Calaber (83 – 90). I had the best teachers in the world. Oh I wish I could relive those days. Anyway, I’m going to do all I can to reach out to my fellow old boys here in New York, and to do all I can to support Project 2010, and to invest in the lives of our future leaders. Come on Rabalac, let’s reclaim our greatness.
Ceeee-bar!! Ceeee-bar!! Ceeee-bar!!
Chairmaine Chin: I played Rugby with your Brother(Freckleton), he was a grat kid, I still remember, powerful lad who was always smiling..yet fearsome. I coach the school’s Rugby Team now..just trying to give back..God bless your familiy.
Cbar needs all thye help it can get..we can all give back in small ways..or large.
This is a really good indication that the administrators of calabar are making a concerted effort to ease the problems of calabar. As a former head student(with garvin) i am real happy that this effort is being made.
I thing the student body is too big for the staff to handle properly. I think discpline could be better if there is smaller size school like what they are doing in new york school system with great sucess.about 1200 or less boys would be better or maybe let the 6th former play a more active leadership role. The local old boys should train the 6th former on an ungoing bases in that skilled area. There should be peer tutoring for slow learners recomended by the subject teacher and closly monitored by the school counsler.Funds had to be spend wiseily and not thrown around. There shoud be a find set up to attrach the best teachers to the school especialy in maths and science.
Calabar need to honor its founder and sucessor like PRICE, DAVIS, MCKINLEY and so on, away with the house names of SPARTA, ROME, ATHEN…… they dont mean a damn to the student, what those city mean to young men in jamaica society that lack discipline. The building , clasrooms , house should be name and honor all those who contrubute to the great high school in jamaica. And those boys should be reminded of those great great leader that pass through and encourage to follow the call og CALABAR – 1978 grad

As a 1981 graduate of Calabar, I owe much of what I have achieved in life to the dedication of the teachers I encountered while a student at C-bar. Mr. Lindsey (Math), Ms Christa Macula (Bio*), Mr. Arnold (Phy) Ms Waugh (Add Math) and all the other teachers who help us to become the persons we are today, we as old boys awe to them to contribute all we can to up-hold the high academic traditions of this great institution.
I am a graduate from the class of 1987, and recently met with a few of my previous classmates who were trying to do some really good things to give back to this great institution. I have been abroad since 1987, and I want to be involved in giving back in any way I can for what this great institution has done for me. Words cannot express how the experiences on those hallowed grounds have helped to positively mold me into who I am today. Here Sir, Here Sir!
calabar is the greatest high school in jamaica and we are the lions that represent it. we are the king of the jungle, the royalties and with this i think that the school should remind the boys that they are the once who have the honor of attending the school and stop acting as if they have to keep anyone around. if they let the boys see that they are serious with them and clear on the decplinary actions that will be taken against them them the boys wont be distroying the school. the staff needs to wake up and stop playing around with the school
i also belive that the school should stop hiring teachers who arnt experienced enough. we are the best high school and so the teachers should be verry experienced and qualified to work there. i also belief that the 6th formers should be brought in on the issue of the boys. if the school utalise the 6th formers into helping them then the struggle which is there with the boy actingg up would be limited greatly.
i am in the S.F.A. and the plans that we have for the school which was brought forth by our love is one inwhich will help the school to continueing being the greatest. if the S.F.A. is given more oppertuniest to carry out there program of helping the school then there will be alot of stress taken of the admin back. i still wish to know how can a school such as calabar be broke when just the name alone attract people. we are know for being the hypest the most exciting school and this year admin is making our name vanish rite b4 us. if u do think of it 1 social that calabar puts on up by the school with proper security can generate a profit no less than 20,000. emagin wat 3 socials a year can do for the school. the funds from this could be use to take care of problems such as painting over some parts of the school, beautifying the school and repairing. the admin needs to do everything they can now to take hold of the school before they lose for good
I give my support to this Project and also give thanks to the persons who placed this idea forward. However, on a more serious matter, it is all good that we have our ideas and also that we have a reasonable method of carrying it out. However, it makes no sense to complete all this hard work if it is going to be going down the drain in a couple months. The fact is that some current students at Calabar have no respect for school property and they could care less about discipline. Before moving forward on the matter of Infrastructure and extra-curricular activities we need to first devise a method as to how we are going to teach the boys respect of school property and the value and importance of discipline. As for the “social” recommended by the fellow sixth former, if we don’t all understand by now why a social can no longer be held on the grounds of Calabar then we wont understand again. The truth is as I have pointed out already “the lack of discipline”, why are you going to add more wood to an already blazing fire? The boys cannot be trusted!!!! That would just cause more trouble and I recognize that you also recommended heavy security, the boys don’t even respect the securities that we see on a daily bases so why do you think they are going to respect the ones they have no ties with.If you want a social activity to be held, then recommend that the S.F.A helps with the planning and promoting of the school’s BAR-B-Q and any other activities that are not held on the school compound. Good luck on the project guys and please keep in mind the things I’ve pointed out. GOD BLESS!!!!
i attended calabar between 1996 and 2001.i must say its a shame to see the condition of the school. You would not know by looking at it that this is the school of greats such as Sir Phillip Sherlock,Rev Hugh Sherlock,Dr Arthur Wint, Herb Mckenley,P.J Patterson etc. However,i have started to play my part in hightening the morale of the students by documenting the schools history and highlighting the acheivements of some of our past students who have made a mark on Jamaica land we love and in most instances the world. The idea is to have the information placed around the schools compound on plaques to remind the boys that this is not just another school BUT this is CALABAR HIGH SCHOOL and that they have a reputation to preserve. To support this venture contact omarthluck@yahoo.com
IT is amazing that inexpensive projects such as a beautification project for the entrance of the school has been so long in comming.Just imagine how easy it would be if each sixth form boy and a few past students should take a plant each to the school on a early saturday morning and decide to plant and maimtain them.BOGANVILAS comes in several different colours and are durable plant.what do you think.we have to highten the morale of the boys by preparing an environment suitable for learning and one that they can be proud of.omarthluck@yahoo.com
I’m proud of this fine institution of higher learning. They don’t just only excel in academics but athletics also. I will represent for the green and black to the day i die
Calabar high school has improve there protection towards the children and that’s what Calabar needed. Too many robery was taking place. The next thing is the weapons.I was playing football and a boy pulled a knife from his waist.Telling us not to touch the ball.Apart from the voilence the school is the best in sports and a little on academics.Calabar is very old school and we need to keep Calabar’s tradition of good work.we need this school to keep it’s unity with peace and pride.
im a parent of one of c-bars promising student,im voicing my concern in response to an article i saw of the schools facilities,i must say from what ive seen if i did not know the repitation calabar school have carries,i would have been gutted 2 take my son from there, but the overall thing is the same students of the institution are the same ones who are destroyin the facilities.my opinion is there should b tightier restrictions and more detentions for the persons who is caught vandalising their own school materials and facilities…in order for a better calabar each and every one at the institution has to pull together and answer here sir, here sir to the calabar call.
The Jamaican Government should do much more for a school such as Calabar High! All corporate businesses and the chamber of commerce should should get on board to assist this Great School and not to sit idly by while this great institution fall apart. This school is one of the top high schools in jamaica and should remain so for years to come.
I say to the management; keep up the good work and be of good courage. My son will enter in September. God Bless Calabar!
